About This Course

This course is designed for adults who want to improve their English for work, further study or daily life. Whether you missed out at school or want to build on what you already know, we’ll support you every step of the way. You’ll work in a relaxed, supportive environment, with expert tutors who understand the needs of adult learners.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll develop your skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening - from understanding instructions and writing emails, to joining in discussions and producing formal documents. We’ll help you improve your spelling, grammar and punctuation, and grow in confidence using English in real-life situations.

Where It Can Take You

Completing this course can open doors to further study, Apprenticeships or employment opportunities. A Level 2 Functional Skills qualification is equivalent to a GCSE pass and often required by employers or for entry onto higher-level courses.

Course Structure

This part-time course is delivered flexibly to fit around your life. You’ll study in small groups, with a mix of classroom sessions, online learning and 1-to-1 support. You’ll complete tasks and practice papers to prepare for a short exam at the end of the course.

Do I need any qualifications to start this course?

No - this course is open to anyone aged 19+ who would benefit from improving their English for everyday life, work or further learning.

What's the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?

Level 1 is ideal if you're building confidence in reading, writing and communication. Level 2 is more advanced and is often used to meet entry requirements for jobs or further study.

Is Functional Skills English the same as a GCSE?

Not exactly - but Level 2 Functional Skills is accepted by many employers and training providers as an equivalent to GCSE grade 4/C.

What topics are covered in the course?

You'll develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in real-life contexts - such as understanding instructions, writing emails, or taking part in discussions.

Will I need to take an exam?

Yes - the course ends with an assessment in reading, writing and speaking/listening. We'll help you prepare with plenty of practice and support.

Is this course suitable if English isn't my first language?

Yes - many learners who speak English as a second language take this course to improve confidence and gain a qualification. It's a supportive starting point.
