Level 3 Teaching Assistant

This nationally recognised apprenticeship prepares you for a career supporting children and young people in primary, secondary or special schools.

Overview

This apprenticeship is ideal if you’re working - or want to work - as a Teaching Assistant in a school. It equips you with the practical skills and knowledge to support pupils’ learning and development, manage behaviour, work effectively with teachers, and contribute to the overall classroom environment. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to build on experience, this programme offers a structured route into education.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll learn how to support children and young people with different needs and abilities, understand curriculum expectations, promote positive behaviour, and contribute to planning and assessment. Topics also include safeguarding, child development, communication, SEND awareness, and working with parents and carers.

How It Works

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in a school while completing structured training with Competence Development Academy. Your learning is delivered through workplace support, tutor visits, workshops and online tasks. You’ll build a portfolio of evidence and complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to achieve your qualification.

Where It Can Take You

Successful apprentices often move into full-time TA roles, or progress to Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA), SEN support, or initial teacher training pathways such as PGCE or School Direct.

Entry Requirements

Typically 5 GCSEs including English and Maths. You must be employed in a school or have an employer willing to support your apprenticeship.

Eligibility & Funding

This apprenticeship is fully funded for eligible learners via the Apprenticeship Levy or employer co-investment. Learners must be employed for at least 30 hours per week in an educational setting. If you’re not currently employed in a school, we may be able to help you find a placement.
