Level 4 Sports Coach (Schools)

This Level 4 Apprenticeship prepares you to deliver high-quality physical activity and PE sessions in primary, secondary or special schools - combining employment with advanced training.

Overview

This advanced apprenticeship is for those working or aspiring to work as a sports coach in a school setting. You’ll gain the skills to design and deliver effective PE and physical activity programmes, support children’s development, and align your coaching with national curriculum expectations. Whether you’re new to education or progressing from earlier qualifications, this is a hands-on, employer-based route into a meaningful career.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll develop your ability to plan, deliver and review physical education sessions tailored to different age groups and learning needs. The programme covers child development, safeguarding, inclusive practice, behaviour management, and aligning coaching with school values. You’ll also build leadership, communication, and reflective practice skills that are essential in education settings.

How It Works

As an apprentice, you’ll be employed in a school or community education setting while completing structured off-the-job training with Competence Development Academy. Learning includes tutor visits, workshops, remote support and a portfolio of evidence. You’ll complete a practical coaching assessment and End-Point Assessment (EPA) to achieve your qualification.

Where It Can Take You

This qualification prepares you for roles such as School Sports Coach, PE Teaching Assistant or Physical Activity Mentor. It can also support progression into PE Teaching (via PGCE) or community sport development roles.

Entry Requirements

Typically 5 GCSEs including English and Maths. You must be employed in a relevant setting or supported by an employer to begin.
